Go Online with GEnie… Over 100 products and services, As much time as you want, All for just $4.95 a month
Turns out there are a lot of caveats with that offer. The “as much time as you want” is after 6pm, otherwise you pay $18/hour(!) for daytime use. And you’re only getting GEnie Basic Service.
If you want to download files, get online news, or book travel online, you need to go up to the GEnie Value tier at $6/hour in non-prime time. Specialty services like Charles Schwab Brokerage cost extra.
No mention of the internet in the brochure, so GEnie was a walled garden in 1992. Was there a way to bypass that, and get out into the web? I recall starting internet use ’94-’95 I think.
