Cavaliers & Roundheads released in 1973, intended by partners Gary Gygax & Don Kaye to help fund publication of Dungeons & Dragons. C&R is in the familiar “Little Brown Book” format as with other early TSR releases.

Cavaliers & Roundheads is like a cliff’s notes version of Chainmail. It is succinct, to the point, has no fluff except a couple of pages of art describing uniforms. And it is musketeer-like focused on its topic: the English Civil War of 1642. No dragons, no uber powered Landsknechte, just English, Scottish, and Irish troops battling for the political fate of the Kingdom of England. Even if you’re not a history buff you’ve no doubt heard the famous name Oliver Cromwell, this war is why.

Cavaliers & Roundheads was written by Jeff Perren & Gary Gygax. The 1st edition has the early GK logo on the front. 2nd edition (printing) released in 1975, and has the TSR Lizard Logo.

I have a C&R 1st in the shop. Since I’m not clear on its value, I’m putting the C&R up for auction. All the photos are going here for posterity. Enjoy.

If the art style looks familiar, it’s Greg Bell, who inked illustrations in Original Dungeons & Dragons.
